AI is an increasingly prominent part of modern life, and it’s becoming a bigger feature on computers and other devices, too. On Windows 11 machines, for example, Microsoft has made its AI assistant, Copilot, an integral feature. Copilot appears in the Windows taskbar and is always accessible and available.
However, you might not want that. You may not use or benefit from Copilot or Windows AI features, and prefer to remove them. This guide explores how to remove Copilot Windows 11.
How to Remove Copilot Windows 11 via the Settings
We’ll start off with the simplest method. This won’t completely remove Copilot from your device, but it will make the Copilot icon disappear from your taskbar.
Step 1. Open the Settings. You can quickly access them by pressing the “Windows” and “I” keys simultaneously.

Step 2. Go to “Personalization” and then “Taskbar.”

Step 3. Under “Taskbar items,” you should see “Copilot.” Toggle it off to make the icon disappear.

How to Remove Copilot From Windows 11 Using the Group Policy Editor
If you want a more permanent solution, you can disable Copilot entirely through a tool called the Group Policy Editor. Note, however, that this tool is only available on the Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 11. If you’re using a different version, skip to the next method (using the Registry Editor).
Step 1. Open the Group Policy Editor. You can find it by searching for it in the search bar.

Step 2. Using the menu on the left side, click on the following folders: “User Configuration” > “Administrative Templates” > “Windows Components” > “Windows Copilot”

Step 3. Click to select the setting labeled “Turn off Windows Copilot.” Then right-click on it and select “Edit.”

Step 4. Click to “Enable” the option. Then click “Apply,” followed by “OK.”

Step 5. Restart your device, and you should see that Copilot is no longer there.
How to Remove Copilot Windows 11 Through the Registry Editor
If the above method isn’t working or accessible to you, there is one last method to try. You can use the Registry Editor utility to also disable Copilot on your Windows 11 machine.
Step 1. Open the Registry Editor. Just type “Registry Editor” into the search bar to find it quickly.

Step 2. Using the left menu, navigate to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Step 3. Right-click in any blank space in the box on the right side, then select “New,” followed by “DWORD (32-bit) Value.”

Step 4. Type “ShowCopilotButton” as the name for your new value. Then double-click to open it and set its value to “0”. That should make the Copilot icon disappear from your taskbar as well as disabling Copilot AI functionality for your machine.
